Trims and labels are 5-15% of your per-piece cost but 100% of your brand visibility. This guide covers every trim category, the design rules, the legal requirements for international sales, and the trade-offs between stock and custom options — so you can decide what to invest in for your brand at each order size.

Why trims and labels matter more than you think

  • They are 5-15% of your per-piece cost, but rarely visible on the MOQ calculation
  • They are 100% of your brand visibility on the garment itself — the customer touches the label before they touch the fabric
  • Several are legally required (care label, country of origin, fiber content) — getting them wrong = customs holds
  • Custom trims have their own MOQ (typically 1,000-5,000 pieces per design), separate from the garment MOQ

The 12 trim categories explained

1. Main label (brand label)

  • Where: center back neck (most common) or back waistband (pants) or hem (some knit garments)
  • Stock vs. custom: stock labels (0.05-0.10 USD) vs. custom woven labels (0.15-0.30 USD)
  • Materials: woven (most premium), printed (cheaper), leather (luxury), metal (caps, bags), rubber (athletic wear)
  • Custom MOQ: 1,000-5,000 pieces depending on type (woven labels usually 1,000+)
  • Lead time: 7-15 days for custom woven

2. Care label

  • Required by law in most countries
  • Must include: fiber content by percentage, country of origin, care instructions (wash, bleach, dry, iron, dry clean)
  • Format: woven (premium) or printed (cheaper, satin base)
  • Position: side seam (most common) or center back neck (for some knits)
  • Symbols: ISO 3758 (international), ASTM D5489 (US), JIS L0217 (Japan)

3. Size label

  • Stock vs. custom. Usually small (S/M/L or numeric 28/30/32)
  • Often combined with care label on a single strip
  • Custom MOQ: 1,000+ pieces

4. Hang tag

  • Where: attached to garment via string loop or pin
  • Card stock: 250-350 gsm typically (thicker = more premium)
  • Finishes: matte laminate (subtle premium), gloss laminate (vibrant), soft-touch (premium feel), foil stamp (luxury), embossing (logo depth)
  • Most visible at retail point-of-sale
  • Custom MOQ: 500-2,000 pieces, lead time 10-15 days

5. Zipper

  • Brand: YKK (premium, 60% market share globally), SBS (mid-tier), generic Chinese (acceptable for basics)
  • Types: metal (jeans, jackets), plastic / Vislon (jackets, bags), nylon coil (lightweight, soft)
  • Sizes: 3#, 5#, 8#, 10# (the larger the number, the bigger the zipper teeth)
  • Pull type: standard, decorative (for branding), branded pull (YKK custom pulls)
  • Price: 0.10-1.00 USD per zipper

6. Buttons

  • Materials: plastic (cheapest), metal, wood, shell, leather (luxury), corozo (eco)
  • Sizes: ligne (1 ligne = 0.635 mm) for legacy sizing, or millimeters
  • Snap buttons (also called press studs) for jackets, rompers
  • Custom engraved or embossed buttons for premium brands
  • Price: 0.05-0.50 USD per button (custom engraved premium)

7. Snaps and press studs

  • For jackets, rompers, onesies, workwear
  • Materials: stainless steel, brass, plastic-coated
  • Brand: YKK (premium), generic (acceptable for basics)

8. Drawstring and drawcord tips

  • For hoodies, joggers, jackets, shorts
  • Materials: cotton, polyester, paracord (athletic wear)
  • Aglets: the metal or plastic tips at the ends of drawstrings (often branded)
  • Custom MOQ: 1,000-5,000 pieces

9. Elastic

  • For waistbands, cuffs, socks, swimwear
  • Types: woven (most durable), knitted (soft), braided (lightweight)
  • Width: 2-5 cm typical for apparel, 8-15 cm for underwear waistbands
  • Usually stock from the factory

10. Thread

  • Standard vs. bonded (bonded for performance gear with stretch)
  • Color matching: stock colors (more options, faster) vs. custom Pantone match (premium)
  • Tex size: 30-50 for most apparel seams (higher number = thicker thread)

11. Velcro and hook-and-loop

  • Brand: Velcro (premium, holds longer) vs. generic (acceptable for basics)
  • Width: 2-5 cm typical
  • Often stock, but for performance gear custom branded Velcro is an option

12. Interfacing and reinforcement

  • For collars, cuffs, plackets, waistbands
  • Types: woven (premium, holds shape), non-woven (cheaper, can pucker), knit (stretchy)
  • Usually stock from the factory — rarely custom

For small first orders (under 500 pieces): use stock trims to avoid label MOQ issues. Order custom trims separately for repeat orders at lower MOQ (some label makers do 500-1,000 piece minimums for a premium).

Legal requirements for labels (international)

Care label content (required by most countries)

  • Fiber content by percentage (e.g. “100% Cotton” or “80% Cotton, 20% Polyester”)
  • Country of origin (“Made in China”)
  • Care instructions (wash, bleach, dry, iron, dry clean symbols)
  • Manufacturer or importer identification (your company name or your brand name)

Country-specific variations

Market Standard Notes
United States FTC + ASTM D5489 English text + symbols, durable to 50+ wash cycles
European Union ISO 3758 Pictograms with optional text in local language
Japan JIS L0217 Japanese symbols
Canada Similar to US Bilingual English / French labels often required
Mexico NOM-004-SCFI Consumer information in Spanish
Australia / NZ AS / NZS 2621 Similar to ISO

Country of origin (“Made in China”)

  • Required by US, EU, and most countries on every garment
  • Must be on a permanent label (not just hang tag, which can be removed)
  • Multi-language requirements if your market is multilingual: e.g. “Made in China / Fabriqué en Chine / 中国製 / Fabricado en China”

How to specify trims in your tech pack

For each trim, include in your tech pack:

  1. Quantity per garment (e.g. “1 main label, 1 care label, 1 hang tag”)
  2. Position with reference image or measurement (e.g. “main label centered 1.5 cm below back neck seam”)
  3. Material and dimensions (e.g. “main label: 1.5 cm x 4 cm, satin polyester, white background, black logo”)
  4. Custom design details: logo file (vector AI / EPS), colors (Pantone codes), font (or “use existing brand font”)
  5. Attachment method: sewn in (most common), heat pressed (some performance labels), sewn on (for outer brand labels), attached with string loop (hang tags)
  6. Supplier reference if specific (e.g. “YKK 5# nylon zipper, color code 580”)

Common mistakes first-time buyers make

  1. Not budgeting custom label MOQ — custom woven labels often have 1,000-5,000 piece minimum, separate from the garment MOQ. If your first order is 300 pieces but labels need 1,000 minimum, you will pay for 1,000 labels or find a smaller label maker.
  2. Country of origin on the wrong label — must be on every garment (the permanent care label), not just on the hang tag. Hang tags can be removed by retailers; the permanent label is the legal one.
  3. Care label content mismatch — the fiber content on the label must match the actual composition. Random US Customs inspections do check; mismatches can trigger a customs hold or return shipment.
  4. Hang tag attached with hard plastic loop — can scratch baby skin or sensitive skin; use soft cotton or fabric loop for kidswear and sensitive-skin markets.
  5. Custom buttons with too-small design details — small text or fine details on a 12mm button become unreadable. Design at 14-15mm minimum text height.
  6. Forgetting to specify zipper color — YKK ships zippers in 50+ standard colors; if you do not specify, the factory picks the default, which may not match your fabric.
  7. Not registering your trademark before first bulk order — most countries require a registered trademark for customs and brand protection. Apply before your first bulk order to avoid customs delays on shipment.

FAQ

How much do custom labels add to per-piece cost?

0.20-0.80 USD per garment depending on how many custom trims you have. A typical setup (main label + care label + size label + hang tag) adds 0.50-1.00 USD per garment in custom trim cost. This is usually 3-8% of the per-piece price for an OEM order.

Can I order custom trims separately from garments?

Yes. Most trim suppliers (label makers, zipper suppliers, button manufacturers) sell direct. For first orders, it is often easier to source separately to avoid fabric MOQ + garment MOQ + trim MOQ all stacking up. Direct trim suppliers also often accept lower MOQs than the factory preferred trim partners.

What if my first order is under the trim MOQ?

Use stock trims for the first order. Order custom trims separately at lower MOQ (some label makers do 500-1,000 piece minimums for a premium — you pay slightly more per piece but avoid forcing the factory to order 5,000 labels when you only need 200). Switch to custom trims in the bulk order once your quantity justifies it.

How long do custom trims take to make?

  • Woven labels: 7-12 days
  • Printed labels: 5-10 days
  • Hang tags: 10-15 days
  • Custom zippers: 10-20 days
  • Custom buttons: 15-30 days

Trim lead time is often the bottleneck for the sample stage. Plan trim order + sample production in parallel to save time.

Where can I find trim suppliers in China?

Trim suppliers are abundant in Yiwu (Zhejiang, southern China) and Shenzhen (Guangdong). Many factories have in-house label making or preferred trim partners. For specific brands (YKK zippers), buy direct from the brand distributor or their authorized agent.

Can the factory source trims for me?

Yes, most factories include trim sourcing as part of the order. They have a list of approved trim suppliers. For custom trims with specific designs, you provide the design and the factory arranges the production. Factory-led trim sourcing is convenient but sometimes 10-20% more expensive than direct trim sourcing for premium custom trims (YKK zippers, custom engraved buttons).

Do I need to register a trademark before putting my brand name on labels?

Yes, in most countries a registered trademark is required for customs and brand protection. Apply for trademark registration in your target market before your first bulk order to avoid customs delays on shipment. Trademark registration typically takes 6-12 months, so apply early.

What is the difference between woven and printed labels?

Woven labels: threads are woven into the label design, durable to 50+ washes, premium feel and tactile quality. Printed labels: design is printed onto a base fabric (satin, cotton), less durable to washing but cheaper. For inner labels (main, care, size): woven is preferred for durability. For outer branding (on hats, bags): either works depending on the look you want.

What is a size label combined with care label?

A single label strip that has the size indication on one end and the care content on the other end. Saves on label cost and sewing time. Common in knits and structured shirts. One label, two purposes.

What about RFID or NFC hang tags?

Some brands use RFID hang tags for inventory tracking and anti-counterfeit. Cost per tag is significantly higher (1-3 USD vs. 0.20-0.50), but the data you get (sell-through, returns, counterfeit detection) can be valuable for premium brands. Custom order minimums: 5,000+ pieces for RFID tags.

How this fits the buyer journey

Trims and labels come up at every step of the order process:

How we work at Kemondo

At Kemondo Apparel, we have in-house label sourcing relationships with 5+ label suppliers in Shenzhen and Yiwu. For first orders, we help you decide between stock and custom trims based on your quantity and brand goals. Custom labels typically add 0.30-0.50 USD per garment (main + care + size + hang tag). We always include care label content review (legal compliance) and country of origin placement in our pre-shipment inspection. For brands with unusual trim requirements (custom-branded YKK pulls, leather patches with embossing, etc.), we source directly from the brand-approved supplier rather than the factory preferred list.
